  A Few Curious Finds

Many hours of work and searching have resulted in a few curious sonar finds. The sonar images shown here are snapshot captures taken from the live data streaming in from the sidescan sonar. A sonar image is produced one line at a time on the monitor and after staring at the monitor for hours on end, one can begin to see things that really aren't there. The image below labled "Quick" was one we initially thought was a mind trick, but it turned out to be real. When it first appeared on the screen, one of the crew said "Look, the word Quick!" Well, if you stare at the image, there is a formation that could be imagined to spell quick. Interesting to note, that soon after this image scrolled on to the screen, I saw the word "Money" scroll on to my screen at the top left hand corner.(we had 2 screens operational). At the time it was perfectly clear to me, but no one else could see it. After many hours of reviewing the saved data, I have not been able to find the word again. Must have been a trick conjured up by the Oak Island spirits!

Image #1 = This is a sidescan image showing the bottom composition around Oak Island. The dark areas are soft silt. Actually much of the silt is similiar to flour. It is easily disturbed just by swimming too close to it.

The brighter areas are areas of harder bottom. Note the rocks and pebbles.

A sonar emits sound energy. The energy returning to the sending unit, or echo, creates the image. The harder the object hit by the sound, the more energy reflected back, thus a brighter area where the bottom is harder and rocky... darker where it is soft and silty.

OUCH! Image #2 shows the image when the sidescan (towfish) hits the bottom or a large object in the water.
Another nice picture of the bottom, but there is something approaching the towfish. The blobs approaching the center of the picture are not a bottom pattern. There are seals in the area and we think this is a couple of curious seals comming in for a look at this strange looking fish running behind the boat.

The objects to the right of center are a mystery. They appear to be in the water colume but do not resemble a fish. They may be, however, bubbles escaping from the bottom. Methane gas has been found in the area "burping" from the bottom. Any suggestions from the sidescan pros?

Notice the perfect rectangle just below the text. We're not sure what this is as we haven't investigated this further... yet. It is man made and deserves further attention.
Strange objects on the bottom. One looks like the letter "A" No idea what this is.
This image is very interesting. When we first saw it, we named the image "Quick" as the formation seems to spell the word. Whetever the object is, it is almost completely buried in the silt. It is a framework of something and hopefully we will get a chance to dive on it and perhaps be able to identify it. There is a shipwreck rumered to be in the area and we hope this is it, or at least part of it.
This concludes the off shore presentation for the present. There is much more work to do and we will update this section as more information becomes available.
